
Conrad Hilton: Conrad Hilton was born on December 25, 1887 in San Antonio, New Mexico. Hilton attended St. Michael's College and new Mexico School of Menes. he graduated in 1909. As a youth he met late-night trains stopping in San Antonio and escorted passengers to his guests. The room rate was a dollar per night, including meals.
Following a short period in business with his father; the 25-year-old Conrad went to work as a cashier in the New Mexico State Bank in San Antonio and eventually became the President of the bank. He served as a second lieutenant in World WarI.
In 1919, Hilton went to Cisco, with a intention of buying a bank. Instead, he ended up buying a hotel, the Mobley, which became the cornerstone of the Hilton hotel empire. In 1925, he set out to build a new hotel in Dallas, but ran out of money before construction was completed. When the project was finished, Hilton operated the establishment under a lease contract.
When the Depression struck, he had already acquired a modest chain of eight hotels in the Southwest. In a perion whin more than 80 percent of the nation's hotels went into bankruptcy, Hilton managed to hold on to five of his hotels by using profits from his oil lease investments.
In1939, Hilton began building new hotels, while setting out to acquire the most famous examples of America's "Golden Age of Hotels." In 1942 he acquired the Town House in Los Angelse and, a year later; the Roosevelt and Plaza hotels in New York City. He achieved his life long ambition of owning the Waldorf Astoria hotel in New York City.
In1946, he organized his chain of lodging establishments as the Hilton Hotel Corporation and in the succeeding years built luxury hotels around the world under the Hilton name. In 1954, he acquired controlling enterest of his primary management reins to his son, Barron Hilton, in1966, staying on as chairman of the board.
Conard Hilton's autobiography, "Be My Guest", was published in 1957. He died in 1979 at the age of 91.
